Once-Weekly GLP-1 Therapy for Type 2 Diabetes Management
Trulicity is a long-acting prescription medication containing Dulaglutide. It is indicated for the treatment of adults with insufficiently controlled Type 2 diabetes as an adjunct to diet and exercise. It mimics the natural hormone GLP-1 to help the body lower blood sugar levels when they are too high and supports heart health in patients with established cardiovascular risk factors.
Glycaemic Control: Improves blood sugar management by stimulating insulin secretion only when glucose levels are elevated.
Glucagon Regulation: Reduces the amount of sugar the liver produces.
Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: Indicated to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with Type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease or multiple risk factors.
Schedule: Inject Trulicity once a week, on the same day each week.
Technique: The pre-filled pen is designed for subcutaneous injection into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate the injection site each week.
Convenience: Can be administered at any time of day, regardless of meals.
Missed Dose: If you miss a dose, take it within 3 days (72 hours). If more than 3 days have passed, skip the dose and wait for your next regularly scheduled injection.
Thyroid Cancer Warning: In animal studies, dulaglutide caused thyroid tumours. It is unknown if it causes these in humans. Do not use if you or your family have a history of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
Pancreatitis: Seek immediate medical help if you experience severe, persistent stomach pain that radiates to your back, as this may be a sign of pancreatitis.
Kidney Function: Dehydration caused by nausea or diarrhoea can lead to kidney problems. Ensure you maintain adequate fluid intake.
Severe Gastrointestinal Disease: Trulicity is not recommended for patients with severe stomach problems, such as gastroparesis.
Very Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain. These effects are usually mild to moderate and most frequent during the start of treatment.
Hypoglycaemia: While Trulicity alone rarely causes low blood sugar, the risk increases if used with insulin or sulphonylureas.
Heart Rate: Some patients may experience a slight increase in resting heart rate.
Active Ingredient: Dulaglutide (0.75mg or 1.5mg).
Cold Chain Storage: Store in a refrigerator (2°C to 8°C). Do not freeze.
Room Temperature: If necessary, a single pen can be kept at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 14 days, after which it must be discarded.
Light Protection: Keep the pen in the original carton to protect it from light.
