Cystitis Treatments
Cystitis is a common type of urinary tract infection (UTI). It refers to the inflammation of the bladder, usually caused by a bacterial infection. While both men and women can develop cystitis, it is more prevalent in women due to differences in anatomy. The shorter urethra in women allows bacteria to reach the bladder more easily.
The most common cause of cystitis is the bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli), which is normally found in the gastrointestinal tract. Other bacteria, such as Staphylococcus saprophyticus, can also cause cystitis. Risk factors for developing cystitis include sexual activity, use of certain types of birth control, menopause, urinary tract abnormalities, and urinary catheter use.
Common symptoms of cystitis include:
Frequent and urgent need to urinate.
Burning or stinging sensation during urination.
Lower abdominal pain or discomfort.
Cloudy or strong-smelling urine.
Blood in the urine (hematuria)
