Combined Oral Contraceptive & Treatment for Heavy Menstrual Bleeding
Qlaira is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) used to prevent pregnancy. It is unique among contraceptive pills as it contains Estradiol Valerate, a pro-drug of the natural human oestrogen, combined with the progestogen Dienogest. In addition to contraception, Qlaira is clinically indicated for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) in women without organic pathology.
Qlaira uses a "quadraphasic" dosing regimen, meaning the hormone levels vary across the 28-day cycle to mimic a natural cycle. It prevents pregnancy by:
Inhibiting ovulation (the release of an egg).
Thickening cervical mucus to prevent sperm entry.
Altering the uterine lining to prevent implantation.
Usage Instructions
The 28-Day Cycle: Each pack contains 26 active tablets of varying colours and 2 white inactive (placebo) tablets.
Administration: Take one tablet daily at the same time, following the arrows on the blister pack. Do not skip tablets, even during your period.
Missed Pills: If a tablet is more than 12 hours late, or if you suffer from severe gastrointestinal upset (vomiting/diarrhoea), contraceptive protection may be reduced. Follow the specific "missed pill" instructions in the patient leaflet.
Blood Clot Risk: Like all combined pills, Qlaira slightly increases the risk of blood clots (thrombosis). Seek immediate medical help if you experience sudden leg swelling, chest pain, or shortness of breath.
Medical History: Do not use if you have a history of blood clots, severe liver disease, certain types of migraine (with aura), or breast/genital cancers.
Lifestyle Factors: Risk is increased in women who smoke, are significantly overweight, or are over 35 years of age.
STIs: Qlaira is for pregnancy prevention only and does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections.

Monitoring: Regular blood pressure checks and cervical screenings are advised while taking any combined hormonal contraceptive.
