Libromide (Potassium Bromide) 325mg 1 Tab

Libromide (Potassium Bromide) 325mg Tablets - For epilepsy

Description

Libromide (Potassium Bromide) 325mg is a prescription item prescribed by veterinarians as an anti-epileptic agent for use as an adjunct to phenobarbital in the control of refractory cases of epilepsy in dogs.

Libromide 325mg Tablets are a prescription-only veterinary medication containing potassium bromide as the active ingredient. These plain white circular tablets feature a single scored line on one face, allowing them to be divided into halves if needed.
Libromide is classified as a POM-V medication (Prescription Only Medicine - Veterinary) and is specifically formulated for dogs suffering from epilepsy. Each tablet contains 325mg of potassium bromide, providing a precise dosage for effective seizure management.

DirectionsLibromide should be administered orally with food to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal disturbances. The recommended initial dosage is 15mg/kg of body weight twice daily
(equivalent to a total daily dose of 30mg/kg). This twice-daily administration schedule helps maintain consistent blood levels and reduces the risk of side effects. Due to the 24- day half-life of bromide, it may take several weeks or months to achieve steady-state
serum concentrations, so patience is essential when beginning treatment. Libromide is typically prescribed as an adjunct to phenobarbital in dogs with refractory epilepsy where seizure control is unsatisfactory despite appropriate phenobarbital therapy.

Regular monitoring of serum bromide concentrations is recommended, with measurements every 4 weeks for at least the first three months of treatment. The expected therapeutic serum bromide concentration when used with phenobarbital is 800 to 2000 μg/ml, and dosage adjustments should be made based on seizure frequency and serum levels. Ingredients The active ingredient in Libromide is potassium bromide at a strength of 325mg per tablet. Potassium bromide functions as an anti-epileptic agent by stabilizing neuronal membranes and raising the seizure threshold in the central nervous system. This mechanism of action complements that of phenobarbital, making the combination particularly effective for dogs with difficult-to-control epilepsy. The medication works by enhancing the effects of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, which helps reduce the abnormal electrical activity that triggers seizures.
