Carbocisteine is a mucolytic agent clinically indicated for the management of respiratory tract disorders characterised by excessive or viscous (thick) mucus. It is commonly prescribed for adults with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and chronic bronchitis to facilitate easier expectoration (coughing up phlegm).
Unlike cough suppressants, Carbocisteine works by altering the chemical structure of mucus in the airways. By thinning the phlegm, it makes it less sticky and easier to clear, which can help reduce the frequency of flare-ups and improve overall lung airflow.
Initial Dose: Usually 2 capsules (750mg) taken three times daily.
Maintenance Dose: Once symptoms improve, the dose is typically reduced to 1 capsule (375mg) four times daily.
Administration: Swallow capsules whole with water, ideally after meals to minimise potential gastric discomfort.
Duration: Always adhere to the specific dosage and duration prescribed by your healthcare provider.
Stomach Health: Do not use if you have an active peptic or duodenal ulcer.
Monitoring: Use with caution if you have a history of gastrointestinal bleeding.
Coughing: As the mucus thins, you may notice an initial increase in productive coughing; this is a sign the medicine is working. Do not take this alongside cough suppressants (antitussives).
Pregnancy: Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy unless deemed essential by a doctor.
Most individuals tolerate Carbocisteine well. However, potential side effects include:
Digestive System: Nausea, stomach upset, or diarrhoea.
Allergic Reactions: Rare instances of skin rashes or itching.
Severe Reactions: Seek immediate medical attention if you experience gastrointestinal bleeding (dark, tarry stools) or signs of a severe allergic reaction.
Active Ingredient: Carbocisteine 375mg.
Excipients: Contains Lactose Monohydrate and Sunset Yellow (E110). E110 may cause allergic-type reactions in sensitive individuals.
Storage: Keep in the original packaging, stored below 30°C in a dry place. Ensure it is kept out of the reach and sight of children.
