Prescription Treatment for Inflammatory Acne
Zineryt is a topical antibiotic solution used for the treatment of moderate acne. It combines Erythromycin, an antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria associated with acne, and Zinc Acetate, which supports skin healing and may help reduce oil production. It is designed for application to the face, back, or chest.
Antibacterial Support: Reduces the presence of Propionibacterium acnes, the bacteria primarily responsible for acne flare-ups.
Inflammation Reduction: Helps to soothe the redness and swelling associated with inflammatory spots and pustules.
Dual-Action Formula: The combination of zinc and erythromycin is formulated to improve absorption and effectiveness on the skin.
Zineryt is supplied as a powder and a solvent that must be mixed before the first use (usually by your pharmacist).
Application: Apply a thin layer over the entire affected area (not just individual spots) twice daily, usually in the morning and evening.
Clean Skin: Ensure the skin is clean and dry before application.
The 5-Week Rule: Once mixed, the solution is only stable for 5 weeks. Write the date of mixing on the bottle and discard any remaining liquid after 35 days.
Consistency: It may take 10 to 12 weeks of continuous use to see the full clinical benefit.
Antibiotic Resistance: To prevent the development of resistant bacteria, do not use Zineryt for longer than prescribed by your doctor. If your acne does not improve after 12 weeks, a clinical review is required.
Flammability: This solution contains Ethanol (alcohol) and is highly flammable. Do not use near open flames, lit cigarettes, or intense heat sources until the skin is completely dry.
Cross-Resistance: Inform your doctor if you have recently used other macrolide antibiotics (such as clindamycin), as this may affect how well Zineryt works for you.
Sensitive Areas: Avoid contact with the eyes, nose, and mouth. If the solution enters these areas, rinse immediately with lukewarm water.
Zineryt contains alcohol, which can lead to localized skin reactions:
Common: Temporary stinging, redness, or dryness of the skin at the application site.
Management: If dryness is bothersome, you may apply a non-comedogenic (oil-free) moisturiser once the Zineryt has dried.
Rare: Severe peeling or itching. If you experience significant skin irritation, reduce frequency or consult your pharmacist.
Active Ingredients: Erythromycin (40mg/ml) and Zinc Acetate (12mg/ml) once reconstituted.
Solvent: Contains Ethanol.
Storage: Before mixing, store below 25°C. Once mixed, do not store above 25°C. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Keep the bottle upright and out of the reach of children.
Prescription Only Medicine (POM): Zineryt is only available following a clinical consultation. It is a targeted antibiotic treatment and should not be shared with others. Regular reviews with your prescriber are necessary to monitor the progress of your skin.
